Fort of Panagia Island – Small Fortress off Parga
Panagia Island lies just off Parga’s harbor and is one of the town’s most photographed landmarks. Besides the chapel, the islet preserves remains of a small coastal fortification built to guard the approaches to the bay and the nearby castle. Low walls, platforms, and lookout points hint at the strategic role the islet once played.
Today, the fort area is a quiet place for short strolls and panoramic photos of Parga’s colorful waterfront, Valtos Beach, and the Venetian Castle on the hill. In summer, the chapel hosts occasional services and weddings, adding to the island’s atmosphere.
Reaching the islet is typically by small boat or water-taxi from Parga, and by private boat or kayak in calm conditions. Paths are uneven in places, so wear suitable shoes. There are no facilities on the island; bring water, sun protection, and keep the site tidy and respectful.
Combine a visit to Panagia Island with a walk up to the Venetian Castle or a swim at Krioneri and Valtos. The fort remains and viewpoints make a short, rewarding stop for history lovers and photographers alike.
